Are You a Mac or PC?

on Sat, 05/05/2012 - 11:16am

It's Spring 2007, my PC had become a dinosaur. I needed more desk space, more floor space and if possible, less wires. As I surfed the web (yes, we were still "surfing the web" in 2007!), I ventured upon the Apple site. I thought: "Should I dare look at the shiny objects displayed on this web site? But, I'm a true & tried PC user! Well...I do love my iPod Mini...hummmm..."

Days later I was setting up my new Mac Mini! This mighty computer took up less than 7 inches on my desk!!! I added a new HD monitor -- enabling me to watch TV in the lower right-hand corner whille working late at night; and even though I had not successfully reduced the wires since I was still using my PC keyboard and external speakers, I was happy!

Several years and a couple of laptops later, I'm a Mac. Yes, it's true. Once I joined the club, I never looked back. Mac all the way, business and personal. As a tribute to my PC days, I added Windows onto the Mac Mini using Bootcamp and Parallels, but I rarely access the operating system.

Am I like many Mac users? Well, based on the recent article PC vs Mac: Profile of a User [Infographic] by Grace O’Malley for Media Tapper, I don't really fit the classic Mac user category. However, I am a veggie, read Huffington Post & love my Macs!

Ivy League Face-Off: From Sports to Social Media

on Fri, 05/04/2012 - 12:37pm

The Ivy League is near & dear to my heart, as I am a proud Cornellian! Yes, an member of the "high above Cayuga waters" clan. Although we take pride in our professors, such as Carl Sagan, Ivy Leaguers love their sports. Whether following the University of Pennsylvania Men's Basketball Team in the 1979 NCAA Final Four, wearing New York Knick's Jeremy Lin #17 jersey (a Harvard alum) or rooting for Women's Lacrosse standouts, Sarah Plumb of Dartmouth and Jessi Steinberg of Cornell, to receive the prestigious 2012 Tewaaraton Award, historically we can talk sports with the best of the Big Ten!

Now we're in the digital age & social media is another massive playing field. Colleges have forged the way, with the Ivy League playing a big part in the development of the interactive media and its continued reach. So needless to say, I was quite interested in the article Ivy League Facebook Face-Off [Infographic] by Michael van der Galien appearing on Media Tapper Magazine. We recently had the pleasure of meeting the author of Motherhood Exaggerated, Judith Hannan, during the production shoot for the Soaringwords Book Club®. In her interview with Soaringwords' CEO & Founder -- Lisa Honig Buksbaum, Hannan is a story-teller, teacher, our friend and, at times, ourselves. She not only shares her experiences during the illness of her child, Nadia, but allows us to step into her shoes; we understand Hannan's challenges and grow with her revelations. Today, Nadia is a vibrant young woman, a survivor of cancer.

We invite you to watch this interesting, moving and informative video, as well as respond to the discussion guide

World Backup Day on Mar 31, 2012 - Just Do It!

on Sat, 03/31/2012 - 1:02pm

Whether for small business or home, many of us have had challenges backing up our computers on a regular basis. And don't mention our cellphones! What external drive to use? We forget. When I mentioned backing up to one of my friends, she replied, "I have to back up my computer?!"

I've had my share of stories. Upon hearing a drive come to a screeching halt, many heard the familiar cry, "NNNNOOOOOO!" On two different occasions after automated updates began running on my cellphone, I lost all my info. Thank goodness, I backed up the data just the day before. (Yes, this really happened not once, but TWICE.)

So, I have to thank James Barraford of Media Tapper Magazine for letting me know that today is World Backup Day. "Whether it’s storing on the cloud, creating a second hard drive, creating a third hard drive that gets put someplace outside the home in case of fire or theft… we all need to backup and plan for emergencies that can erase years of records, music, and photographs in a split second."

About 30 minutes after I read James' post, I connected an external mini-drive that I like to use on the go, to my computer. What did I hear? beep, beep, doble beep, crank, crank...I kid you not! So guess what I'm doing while I write this post, celebrating World Backup Day! WOO Backup HOO!!! Celebrate with me, checkout James' post at Media Tapper Magazine...
