YouTube: From “Public Access” to Major Player

on Wed, 03/28/2012 - 8:48am

There's nothing like starting off the day sharing new friendships and partnerships. We're happy to welcome into the M.INK family, material from our new partners in new media, Media Tapper Magazine. We met Media Tapper on Google+ and got the vibe, that there was a connection to be planted and sewn. First here's more about Media Tapper Magazine then onto the post, YouTube: From “Public Access” to Major Player by, James Johnson.

Media Tapper Magazine

With social media growth rising rapidly and a new generation prepared for a digital world, user engagement must keep pace with the rapidly changing online environment. Today’s media sources owe it to the people to accurately reflect their way of life in as many venues as possible.  Media Tapper embraces this philosophy and will deliver it on a daily basis in our web-based magazine and multimedia hub. There are lot of e-magazines and social media blogs out there that try to tell users what to do and how to use them. Media Tapper goes beyond that: we are a platform for and by users. Social media users, not our authors and editors, are Media Tapper’s foundation. We want to show readers the person behind the profile and share with the world how they use social media. There are enough self-proclaimed experts out there who think they have all the answers, we do not have the ambition to join their ranks.

YouTube: From "Public Access" to Major Player

I know, the title of this post seems a bit ahead of itself, but the way things move in tech these days, I’m not sure it’s possible to get too ahead of yourself. Just look at the past few years in which we’ve watched YouTube grow from a site where you and your buddies shared crazy home movies into a place where executives and mentors started sharing marketing videos, and Sal Khan created an educational revolution that would eventually grow to become Khan Academy. YouTube has grown into a multimedia force and the vision behind it is only growing stronger.

YouTube has stepped up to offer its own TV channels, movie rentals, news, educational programming, and so much more. It’s as if they’re not content with just being a social pastime, they want to be a major player. Stars such as Madonna, Jay-Z, Ashton Kutcher Shaquille O’Neal, and Amy Poehler either have or are in the process of creating content in order to expand the global Media hub. Add to this the fact that Google is successfully launching their fiber Optics networks in Kansas City, Missouri, it’s easy to see that YouTube is just a part of the media foundation being laid by Google.

According to Google, “Google Fiber will deliver 1 gigabit Internet speeds – that’s roughly 20,000 times faster than dial-up and more than 100 times faster than a typical broadband connection!” Sure, they’re only in Kansas City right now, but what happens after all the testing goes well, and they roll Google Fiber out to the rest of the country? (MORE)

The Video by Anti-Harassment NYC Shows Men Stopping Street Harassment – Released for International Anti-Street Harassment Week

M.INK DP and documentary filmmaker, Fivel Rothberg and his team, are taking their anti-harassment message to the tough streets of NYC through Internet video. Congratulations all for doing your part in helping move the masses toward a better understanding of street-harassment and its negative emotional and social impact on us all. You're once again proving the strength and effectiveness of new media to reach a great number of people quickly and hopefully guide them to permanent action. We hope these efforts are sustained world-wide well beyond one week and that your audience walks away touched and better educated on the importance of standing strong as one, to combat the mistreatment of others.

We’ve all heard the catcalls, the “hey baby’s” and witnessed unwanted male attention on the street. Now, a new video called “Sh*t Men Say to Men Who Say Sh*t to Women on the Street” shows men calling out other men for this type of behavior as it happens. Launched for Anti-Street Harassment Week (March 18-24), the video has gone viral with over 150,000 viewers in less than 72 hours. With interventions from “Please stop” to “Ever heard of E-harmony?” and “Do you think this really works?”, the video riffs on the “Sh*t People Say” meme, which spread like wildfire a month ago. But this one is different: it models what men can do to stop street harassment. Joe Samalin, co-director of the video said, “Look, we know women get harassed on the street all the time, and we also know that not all guys do it. So we wanted to talk to the guys who do it, and give other guys permission to stop or intervene when they see it happening.” “We hoped that maybe 1000 people would watch it and hopefully think twice,” said Fivel Rothberg, also co-director. “But we only dreamed that it would blow up.” Ironically, one of the video’s creators, Bix Gabriel, was even harassed while Rothberg and Samalin were filming a block away. Gabriel was sitting on a park bench at the shoot location when a man approached her and said, “Hey, girl. You pretty under that scarf? You pretty?” He then insulted her as he walked away after she refused to interact with him. (more)

Digital Marketing - Your Customers Are Here, Are You?

on Tue, 01/24/2012 - 1:52pm

So I just came across two separately published but conjoined thoughts regarding the ever-increasing importance of digital marketing. I want to share these simple facts/projections with you, after all helpful ideas should be shared, nurtured and grown that’s what the Internet is all about. One thought came from, Top 5 Digital Marketing Tips for 2012, an article written by Jonathan Gardner,  Director of Communications at Vibrant. Within his forecast for digital marketing in 2012 Gardner believes in the tried and true. He says, "With eMarketer projecting a 14.4% increase in US online ad spending and Google saying that video ads improve offline campaign results, digital will certainly take on added prominence in the new year. Even so, let’s resolve to keep our heads on straight and stick close to the best practices that have been winners in the past – they’ll be the ones to see us through a stellar 2012." Sound advice, along with his top 5 digital marketing tips of which I really like #5. Status quo is great but I must admit that fresh outlooks, new information, promising trends and forward motion excite me!

The other relevant factoid I'd like to share comes from a video by YouTube that I found on Google+. It says, "The world is now uploading more than 60 minutes worth of video per second to YouTube". Wow!! Now that's a lot of video and for those in the digital marketing space comes further confirmation, if you're still looking for it, that computer and mobile video Internet content is an integral, undeniable force in your marketing program from today onward. If you're not there yet, or in the manner you wish to be, find a way to create that video presence online professionally, creatively and effectively. Your customers are here right now, are you?
